@shira Getting search results from your social graph is part of Google's experimental labs, and you have to opt in to see those types of results. So it seems that at this point, one's search results are not connected to the preferences of those in their social graph.

From what I understood from Google Social Search
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlpTjP6h6Ms
your personal preferences will affect the search of the people directly, and once removed, related to you from the social sites you are on. The assumption here is that birds of a feather flock together.

From what I've gathered it will affect both searches you do regularly that are the same (i.e. cookies) and related searches (i.e. "cookies", "cakes")

@Shoshana there won't really be a point of using proxy servers or other means to see unbiased results because nobody else will be getting those types of results since everyone is opted-in to personalized search!

@seobywebmechanix it really is all about survival of the fittest. Those in the SEO biz who are not afraid to evolve, will survive. And as you say, Google's goal is to keep their customers happy, even if that means new SEO models that are inconvenient to us SEOs.

This article is dead-on. My favorite part is that what worked 5 years ago doesn't work anymore. And SEO tactics of today will certainly be different 5 years from now.

Being in the SEO business, these things can make you feel either one of two ways:

1. Scared shitless or
2. Incredibly excited

A lot of companies and "professionals" today are behind the times. I can only imagine that as things continue changing, these "experts" will become even more outdated, leaving the lion's share of the business to people that actually know what's up.

My philosophy (which was kinda touched upon here) is that Google (and every other search engine/social site) is in the content business. People search for stuff, and it's their job to return the most relevant results.

If they start slacking on relevancy, then users will take their searches (and their ad clicks) elsewhere.

Just so long as we keep this in mind (and keep tabs on what's going on) we will be fine.

Will we see the advent of "proxy"-like search tools that reveal an unbiased ranking? This can quickly become a logistical nightmare.
